Gift cards, offered early

Put gift cards on the counter well before the holidays and make them easy to buy as a last-minute present.

Steps

  1. Decide the amounts and a simple card or envelope that looks like a present.
  2. Display them at the register and by the door from early November.
  3. Mention them on your receipts, your listings and your website.
  4. Record each card's number and balance so they are easy to honor.

What to count

Gift cards sold, and first-time visitors who come in with one.

Keep it clean

Under federal rules the money on a gift card generally cannot expire sooner than five years after the card was bought or last loaded, and fees are limited (12 CFR 1005.20). Your state may add more rules.
