What Doorcount keeps
As little as it can. No account, no email address, no name of yours, no tracking cookies.
Your board
A board holds what you type into it: an optional business name, the kind of business, what you count, your time zone, your planned promotions and notes, the step ticks, and one number per counted day. Doorcount stores only a scrambled form (a SHA-256 hash) of your board's link, so it cannot look your board up for you if you lose the link.
Anyone with the link can see and change the board. Do not put personal details about customers or staff on it.
How long
A board that nobody opens for 400 days is deleted with everything on it. Counts older than 400 days are deleted even on a board in use. You can delete a board at any time from its Settings page.
Backups hold copies of the database, boards included:
- a nightly backup, kept on the server for 14 days;
- a copy taken at each software update: the server deletes it after 30 days, and an offline copy of each update's backup is kept by WeldonPC and can outlast that;
- WeldonPC's backups of the whole server, made several times a week and kept for about three to four weeks, and the office backup system, which can keep its copies longer.
A deleted board can stay in these backups until they are replaced.
This browser
To let idea pages offer "Add to" your board, your browser remembers the link of a board made in it, or of a board you asked it to remember, in its own local storage (on this device only, never sent to us except when you open the board). Your board's Settings page has a button to forget it. Forms carry a security cookie that only guards against forged form posts; it has no fixed lifetime and is normally cleared when the browser is closed.
Server records
Like every website, the server keeps standard access logs (address, time, page asked for) for its own operation and security; full board links appear in them. The site's own error log blanks board links out. To limit misuse, Doorcount counts requests per address per day, storing the address only in a scrambled form, and deletes those counters after two days.
Payments
Payments are not switched on. When they are, PayPal will handle them; Doorcount will keep only a scrambled pass key and the plan's status, never card details.
Advertising
Some public pages (the home page, the Idea Hub and each idea, Pricing, For business groups and About) show one banner ad from AdEngine (adengine.us), the small ad network run by WeldonPC, the company behind Doorcount. For now the ads are for WeldonPC's own services. Your board and its pages, the start form, the paper count sheet, this page, the terms and error pages show no ad.
To show the ad, your browser loads a script from adengine.us, asks it for one banner, loads the banner image, and reports once that the page was viewed and once that the banner was shown. Like any website, adengine.us receives your internet address and your browser type with those requests; the requests name this site, and they never carry the address of the page you are on.
- No cookies, no profile. AdEngine sets no cookies, gives you no ID and does not follow you from site to site.
- How your internet address is used. adengine.us looks up the approximate city for your address in a location database kept on its own server (nothing is sent to anyone else), so that ads meant for one area are shown only there. It also uses the address to count each ad view or click only once and to leave out robots and WeldonPC's own office traffic. The address is not stored with the counts; the temporary entries made from it expire within six hours and are cleared from the server within two days.
- What is kept. Daily totals only: page views for this site, and views and clicks for each ad. The adengine.us web server also keeps a standard access log (address, time, address requested, referring site, browser) for security; it is deleted on a rolling schedule.
- Clicking the ad passes through adengine.us, which counts the click, and then opens the advertiser's site, which has its own privacy policy.
- Nothing about you is sold or shared.
Nobody else
Doorcount does not sell, share or rent anything it holds and uses no analytics services or advertising cookies; the ad script counts one page view per page as a daily total. The only outside service the pages load is the adengine.us ad described under Advertising, and only on the pages named there.
